Coaching

In the award-winning Broadway musical Avenue Q, the main character asks: What the heck can I do with a B.A. in English? In my experience, one can do just about anything.

My own writing career began at the age of 5, with some particularly awful poetry. Since then, I’ve job-hopped all over the publishing industry, doing editorial and marketing work for several book publishers, copy editing and writing for both daily and weekly newspapers, and creating content for print and web magazines. At the moment, I’m the Assistant Editor at YourTango.com, and fill up the remainder of my time by writing and editing on a freelance basis. And, after years of wandering, I feel as if I’ve finally found that publishing sweet spot.

Which is where career coaching comes in.

After fielding an increasing number of e-mails over the years from those looking for tips, contacts, and advice, I’ve found that it gives me the warm fuzzies to help others find that sweet spot as well.

Career Coaching for Word Nerds was created to help those trying to find their way through the publishing industry. It’s for those who don’t know how to write a query letter. It’s for those who are unfamiliar with the pitch-to-publish process. And it’s for those who don’t know if they should be writing or editing…creating books or laying out newspaper pages…marketing web content, launching their own blog, or proofreading typeset pages…

What is career coaching, and what can it do for you?

The coaching process is a collaborative effort between coach and client to map out a path to career (and, by extension, life) fulfillment. Through a number of sessions, I can get you on your way to a job and/or career that is in line with your values, motivators, abilities, and life purpose.

How does it differ from consulting?

While consultants solve clients’ immediate problems, coaches provide their clients with the tools necessary to self-coach themselves through future career transitions.
